Racial slurs allegedly made by a white inmate toward a black inmate in the Grant County jail resulted in both getting charged for fighting, with a “hate crime” enhancer added to the white inmate’s charges.
The fight happened at about 8:15 p.m. Friday in the jail in Lancaster, the Grant County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
According to jail staff, the fight was in the J-block of the jail.
A white inmate, Thomas Lazarius-Richwalski, 18, Blue River, allegedly made racial comments to a black inmate, Timmy Johnson, 24, Platteville.
“After the comments were made, Johnson directed Lazarius into his cell, where the fight took place,” said Sheriff Nate Dreckman.
Lazarius was tentatively charged with disorderly conduct with the “hate crime” enhancer and Johnson was tentatively charged with battery by a prisoner.
